Purpose
To use the musical abilities God has given you to His glory.
To grow in musical and technical ability through learning a piece of music well enough to perform before an audience.
To have the opportunity to receive constructive oral and written comments from someone other than the participant's teacher.
To develop self-confidence and poise before a group.
To hear other student musicians perform.
Participant Eligibility
Any student in grades 5-8 who is currently taking instrumental lessons.
Students choose level of difficulty according to their ability.
Each entry should be of performance quality at the time the entry is sent in.
Materials
Four levels of difficulty: students must choose from the accompanying prescribed music list.
Beginner: (see attached list)
Intermediate: Class C music as rated by WSMA
Advanced: Class B music as rated by WSMA
Advanced: Class A music as rated by WSMA
TWO legal copies of a piece, one for performance and one for the judge to use. Measures should be numbered in pencil.
You must have a legal copy for the judge, accompanist, and yourself. (See Copyright Laws) Ratings will be withheld if illegal copies are used. Students participating in the Luther Grade School Band Program will have judge and accompanist copies furnished. Students in this program need to purchase one copy for themselves. Other students must provide all copies.
EVALUATION
Ribbons will be awarded to ratings of I, II, and III.
Judging criteria will be those of WSMA (sheet attached).
Students will receive a rating of I, II, III, IV, and V.
Judges write out evaluations individually; no consensus judging.
All performances are judged on the basis of the written music.
