Students - Parents - Teachers
God has blessed our students with a variety of talents which include singing praises to Him. Our purpose for vocals at Science and Fine Arts is to grow in their singing ability by learning a piece of music, performing it in front of an audience, and to receive constructive comments on their performance. It is our hope that the students will grow in confidence to continue publicly singing songs to His glory.
Participant Eligibility
Any student in grades 5-8 may enter solo, unison ensemble, duet or groups of 3-9. Unison ensemble groups will be made up of 2 or 3 students. Duets and groups other than unison ensembles must sing at least two-part music.
Students choose level of difficulty according to ability. Students who have previously entered at the beginner level may continue to do so, but teachers should encourage students who are capable to enter at a higher level.
Each entry should be of performance quality at the time the entry is sent in.
Choice of Music
Non-WSMA: Any piece of music not on the WSMA* list.
WSMA: Class C, Class B, or Class A (Teachers are to guide the students in their WSMA choice.) WSMA lists are available through the WSMA publication or from local music stores, such as Leithold's or SSE. WSMA is the Wisconsin School Music Association.
You must have as many legal copies of the piece as needed. (See Copyright Laws)
Only one copy for the judge is necessary if the student has memorized the piece and is singing a cappella. At least three copies are needed if both the students and accompanist need music.
Popular music is discouraged because simplified arrangements often differ from recordings, but the music must be performed and judged according to the written music.
Evaluation
Ribbon awards to ratings I, II, and III and IV (Participation).
Judging criteria are listed on judging form.
Judges write out evaluations personally; no consensus judging.
All performances are judged on the basis of the written music.
Introduction
Write out your introduction on a small card.
The room monitor will announce when it is time to begin.
Give the judge a copy of the music, unless the room monitor offers to do this.
Smile and announce your name, school, your accompanist's name, the title and composer of the work, and a single interesting aspect of the piece.
Prepare yourself mentally.
This is your opportunity to give glory to God through the gifts He has given you. Show everyone what you can do. Let any mistakes go by and enjoy singing.
